What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
When deciding what media institution would be best to distribute my media product, I researched into IPC media and Bauer media, looking into what music magazines they publish and how successful the companies were, and which would have the best gap in their market for my magazine.
Both institutions have gaps in their market where my magazine could slot into to, at IPC media they only distribute a couple of music magazines, which are aimed mainly at men, my magazine is aimed for women and men which could be successful as they don't have any unisex music magazines. At Bauer Media they have a handful of music magazines, mostly aimed at men and one music magazine targeted for women, i think my magazine could be successful at Bauer media because they don't distribute music magazines aimed for women and men, as my magazine does it could have a good chance at being successful.
IPC media produce over 60 iconic media brands some of which are NME, TV Times, Nuts and Marie Claire. IPC sells their magazines to two thirds of UK women and to 42% of UK men, which adds up to 26 million adults in the UK. IPC's website is also quite popular, getting around 20 million views every month.
Bauer Media was founded in 1953 and is one of Europe's largest and privately owned publishers, with over 80 influential brand names, offering over 300 magazines in 15 different countries. Bauer's music magazines are mainly targeting males, with magazines such as Empire, Kerrang, Q and Mojo whereas, Bauer only has one music magazine aimed at women, called Pop.
Both companies have a market gap for my magazine, but the distribution I would personally chose would be Bauer Media, this is because they distribute their medias worldwide not just in the UK, which would create a bigger audience that my magazine could appeal to. Also, Bauer target most of their music magazines to men, whereas mine is targeted for males and females and although my magazine is quite similar to Q magazine I think my magazine would easily slot into the institution and become a success in Bauer Media Institution.
